ART IN THE CITY: SYDNEY

We want to celebrate art around the world by asking our MUNTHE muses what art means to them and how it is reflected in the city they live in. That’s why we have started a monthly concept on our social media platforms called ‘Art in the City’.

I n this month’s edition, our Australian muse Helen Driscoll, takes us through her favourite art galleries and museums in her city, Sydney.

Maido Coffee

Female founded by Tara Bennett, Maido Coffee aims to slow down and focus on what’s important, championing sustainably sourced and slow-made products. I love a cup of coffee with the morning sun shining in while browsing Japanese Architecture books. A moment of calm before the city wakes up heading to work. An offshoot of Provider Store and Provider House in Tasmania, Provider Store is anti-consumerist; they seek out like-minded local artisans on their travels and bring their unique handmade ceramics, linens and homewares back to the customers.

Art Gallery of NSW - Sydney Modern Project

A true architectural masterpiece in the heart of Sydney overlooking the harbour and gardens. Naala Badu, which means ‘seeing waters’ is a series of light-filled pavilions and graceful outdoor terraces that step down towards Sydney Harbour. I am always drawn to the Brazilian artist Ernesto Neto’s 'Just like drops in time, nothing' piece which is a supple architectural form made from spiced-filled polyamide fabric. Filled with 450kg of new spices, including turmeric, cumin, pepper, cloves, fenugreek and paprika.

Ariel Books

Also, female founded by Jane Blanks in 1985, Ariel has stood the test of time as one of the most loved independent booksellers in the Eastern Suburbs of Sydney (and my neighbourhood, Paddington!). Ariel stocks some of the most creative fashion magazines from around the world, not forgetting architecture, design and local guides. Of course, they have my favourite Carolyn Bessette-Kennedy coffee table book - a true style inspiration.
