ART IN THE CITY: MIAMI
We want to celebrate art around the world by asking our MUNTHE muses what art means to them and how it is reflected in the city they live in. That’s why we have started a monthly concept on our social media platforms called ‘Art in the City’.
I In this month’s edition, our American muse @mikialamode takes us through her favourite art galleries and museums in her city, Miami.

Rubell Museum
Rubell Museum hosts one of the largest private contemporary art collections in North America. You get a wide range of art in all mediums here and because of its vast space, you get to see leave paintings and sculptural art within the Rubell Museum. When there are special contemporary exhibits that are traveling across the world but only make it to a few contemporary museums, you’ll likely find it arriving as a special exhibit here. Yayoi Kusama is a great example of this.
Galleri Institute of Contemporary art
This gallery offers year-round free access with rotating works of art. While shopping for your favorite fashion items in the Miami Design District, it’s been a great place to step away from the heat and break away from the busy shops and admire art. ICA has a permanent collection, however, regular rotates their exhibits to showcase new talent as well.

Restaurant Elastika
Zaha Hadid was one of the most influential architects of her time. She was an internationally-acclaimed and award-winning architect. Choosing to dine at Elastika inside the Moore Building is such a unique way to admire and engage with art. You really can’t help but steal glances above to admire the juxtaposition of the art and building while dining here. The food is also great at Elastika – with cocktails inspired by the work of Zaha Hadid.

PUBLIC ART MIAMI DESIGN DISTRICT
Miami Design District is unlike any other outdoor shopping experience. You'll find many great interactive sculptural works by both local and international artists that you can admire around the clock. You can touch, play and engage with the artwork around the clock. While some of the pieces are permanent, much of the interactive displays rotate as Art Basel Miami rolls around.
For example, this week Nicole Nomsa Moyo’s "Pearl Jam" was installed in anticipation for Art Basel. It is an interactive installation of jewelry-themed experiences, including giant pearls, a deconstructable necklace, a sprawling bracelet, and radiant earrings. It has individual seating built in so guests can touch, feel, and admire while people watching all day long.
FAVORITE FLY’S EYE DOME
Fly's Eye Dome was designed by Buckminster Fuller, however he passed before its completion. In 2011, collector Craig Robins acquired the 24-foot prototype to exhibit it and use it as inspiration for a key element of the Miami Design District. It stands as the entryway into the parking garage in Palm Court, and was built with state of the art materials, but remains a center meeting place for visitors around the world.
This is my favorite of the art featured because it’s an impactful sculptural structure that doubles as art and architectural entryway to the parking lot of a very common meeting place, the Palm Court. It's a overwhelming large scale design with form and function. It’s placed in the heart of the district, where people shop, sit and enjoy a meal and people watch.
